About DT Client Portal

DT Client Portal offers you and your clients an ultra-convenient way to access documents and software, transfer data, and convey information. The portals are private, secure extensions of your website that give your clients 24/7 access to your services.

Tax documents can be sent to DT Client Portal as follows:

  • Via DT FileCabinet.

This method requires some manual configuration in both DT FileCabinet and DT Client Portal before the tax documents will be available to your clients. This configuration must be repeated whenever you send documents for a client to DT Client Portal for the first time. For more information on printing documents to DT FileCabinet, please consult the DT FileCabinet knowledge base page.

  • Directly from DT Max (recommended).

This method is virtually automatic. After a one-time configuration (found under Preferences > DT Client Portal), nothing extra needs to be done the first time you send the Client copy of the tax return to DT Client Portal. DT Max will create the DT Client Portal user account for you. Note: If you will also be sending documents from DT FileCabinet to DT Client Portal, you will, of course, still need to manually link the new DT Client Portal accounts created by DT Max to the DT FileCabinet Drawers (this can be done by logging into DT Client Portal, clicking the Admin button, selecting the client in question, clicking on the "Document Presentation" button, and adding the appropriate drawer).

Best Practices

  • If you will be sending documents to DT Client Portal both directly from DT Max, as well as from DT FileCabinet, you should first let DT Max create your clients in DT Client Portal. This will ensure that the users are set up correctly, and that DT Max is linked to the correct DT Client Portal user accounts. Keep in mind that you will still need to manually link the new DT Client Portal accounts created by DT Max to the DT FileCabinet Drawers (this can be done by logging into DT Client Portal, clicking the Admin button, selecting the client in question, clicking on the Document Presentation button, and adding the appropriate drawer).
  • Only send tax returns from DT Max to DT Client Portal, not from DT FileCabinet too. If you also send tax returns from DT FileCabinet to DT Client Portal, you will end up with duplicate copies. This only applies to the Client copy of the tax return. If you need to send a different copy of the tax return, or specific forms to DT Client Portal, you should still send these via DT FileCabinet.
  • When sending tax returns to DT Client Portal directly from DT Max, you should only do it from your main database. This will prevent additional DT Client Portal accounts from being created for the same user. If, for example, you extract a client from your main database, and merge the file into another database (e.g., on your laptop), the other database will not know if a DT Client Portal account already exists. If you transmit tax returns for the same client from two different databases, two DT Client Portal accounts will be created for the same user.
